On Longing

"Objects of Desire" Sentence Response The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale. The video above depicts the colossal skeleton of a thirteen meter Bryde's whale on display at the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island. Long has the whale been a creature that has captivated and mesmerized. Elusive in nature despite their immense size, the gentle giants have embodied the vast and mysterious essence of the cosmos. I gazed intently at the repeated curvature of ribs that had once encased the gears and levers that brought life to the ancient, milk-stained bones in front of me. It struck me, at one time crimson veins snaked through now absent tissue and cartilage, pumping the gooey essence of life and spirit through this beast. I have never come in contact with a whale. Clay Covered Hands Heavy, sulfur-tainted air pierces the senses, imbedding itself in tangled hair and skin as it drifts haphazardly through mossy grasses, bursting, like fingers desperate to be grasped, through the ashen mud beneath it. This is the notorious Florida marshland. The putrid aroma and jet black peat that compose these bog-like territories are usually enough to set anyone off of wandering too deeply within its mysterious trenches. Yet, buried deep within the Earth’s belly lie the tales of ancient people who once roamed this seemingly inhospitable land. Through their unearthing, archaeologists have tapped the untainted sap that pulses through the veins of time itself. Today people who have somehow survived accidental burning come to the burn units of Metropolitan hospitals to be redressed. If their burns are too deep for the body to repair by itself, they receive temporary coverings (cadaver skin, pigskin, lubricated gauze) until doctors can begin grafting skin from other body parts.
